Arizona Daily Star Estrella Editor
José Merino is editor of La Estrella de Tucsón, a free weekly Spanish publication (37,000
circulation). La Estrella is a project that Merino developed as part of the Arizona Daily Star in Tucson, Arizona while taking
classes to obtain his MBA.
From 2000 to 2004, Merino served as Design Director at the Star overseeing
the design and graphics departments. During his term in charge of the visual
team at the Star, he re-designed various products including the Northwest
Section, At Home, La Estrella, and the Arizona Daily Star.
Before joining the Star seven years ago, he worked 3 years as Graphic Editor
at - 21st edition World Best Designed Newspaper- Mural in Guadalajara,
México and 5 years for El Imparcial, a daily newspaper in Hermosillo, México.
In 200, Merino was a fellow of the NAMME's Leadership Development Institute
participating in the Albert Fitzpatrick Minority Leadership program; in 2004
he assisted to the American Press Institute's designing for tomorrow¹s readers workshop. During his career as a visual journalist has won numerous awards and has served as a
judge and speaker for Society for News Design and other local and national organizations.
