Director Socorro Carrizosa is the Director of Chicano/Hispano Student Affairs at the University of Arizona. A successful educator and retention specialist with twenty-five years of experience, her work has focused on creating learning communities that provide safe and welcoming environments where students embrace their cultural identity, develop peer and faculty relationships and thrive as they pursue their academic interests. Her active community and university service has included assignments to the President’s Taskforce on Hispanic Student Issues; the President’s Hispanic Advisory Group; UA Retention Coordinating Group; UA Academic Advising Taskforce; the Athletic Department’s Hispanic Advisory Group; and, the College Academy for Parents. She has been an active member of many community service groups and organizations such as the UA Hispanic Alumni Association; the Cesar Chavez Coalition; the Tucson Hispanic Coalition; as well as a board member of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation; and the Board of the Brewster Center Against Domestic Violence. As a founding board member of the Media, Democracy and Policy Initiative, Ms. Carrizosa is committed to social justice and social change and to helping create an Institute that will address issues concerning the image and identity of Latinos in America.
